The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary was established by Congress in 1939 under title 14, §§ 23 of the U.S. Code as the volunteer arm of the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary performs Safety and Security Patrols, Search and Rescue, Vessel Safety Exams, and conducts public education classes in Recreational Boating Safety. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary operates in any mission as directed by the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard or Secretary of Homeland Security. However, we do not perform law enforcement or military operations.
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, with over 30,000 men and women, is a unique force that carries out an array of responsibilities touching almost every facet of the U.S. maritime environment.
